The Fountain of Youth World Summit with David Wolfe, nutrition authority and author of Sunfood Success System.
Kevin: I’m excited about this speech today and we’ll get to the heart. Why not tell us a little, uh, how you started in this area and your personal history?
David: Well, I think I am oriented towards natural foods when I arrived in California when I was seven. This was the first time I’ve ever eaten an orange or a tangerine out of a tree and that memory has continued to stay with me and that’s probably what got me started. I ended up growing up as a sort of San Diego, Southern California, Los Angeles and surfing was almost directed, I think, to genetically natural healing and health because my parents are doctors and they met at medical school. In fact, I was conceived in a library of medical school!
Kevin : Okay.
David: So in a strange way it’s something that was probably preordained. I am heavily involved in the natural food when I went to college because I started buying my own food. I realized that I was allergic to quite a few different foods. I had no idea that food allergies even existed before, especially dairy products. So I stopped eating dairy products and in doing so, I thought I’d better study this subject and began to research nutrition and read books on nutrition and that inevitably leads me to what was really easy and simple, who had just eaten an orange, eating an apple, eat natural foods. It is the fastest food. Being a very busy person to study a large number to the school at that time, going to three different degrees both just made the most sense for me, health food, home, food raw. And finally after a number of years I became a raw food eater, which means that I eat I eat salads and fruits. I like to eat nuts and seeds, and eat algae and all sorts of things like that because he was – he had made no preparation.
Kevin :
David: And it’s – that led me into what was to turn a hobby into a career in nutrition because people always ask me what you eat? We want to know what you are experiencing. Then we have what you are experiencing? And finally led to a book, and several books, and lecture tours and a set of fun in between.
Kevin : Sure. And many people come to you for nutrition advice. What do you think is their state of mind when they are introduced to your philosophy of eating?
David: I think the general mentality is open there. People really want to believe with all the choices we have, and all knowledge that is available, people just want to know the easiest way to do the right thing. And my job is to connect people with simple foods that are great for weight loss that are fun to eat, that taste good, which are natural, which have minimal processing so they can get at the end of their day and go, you know what? I did something good to me, for my family, for the planet.
Kevin: What are the three or four things you can identify what you can basically say almost everyone lost weight, a key to weight loss or success in Food?
David: I think the key to losing weight is that you want to get more for your money. You want more nutrition, fewer calories, more fiber. Well, what to assimilate? This simply means eating more plants. This means eating more salads. This means eating more vegetables. This means eating more fruit. This means eating seaweed, nuts and seeds and things of that nature, and less of everything else. Thus, my approach to food is very attractive because you get to eat things that taste good. It’s not dogmatic. This is not something where it goes, you can not eat it. You have to eat it. It’s just eating place, because there is only so far you can eat in one day, a few other choice for a snack, for example, with healthier choices, replacing, for example a great dinner meal with half of it being a salad. So, again, we’re getting more nutrition. We get less calories and we get more fiber and makes us feel satiated, but it starts to increase our metabolism so we start dropping the weight. I even go into details about foods that speed metabolism, which is a very important thing for us now. For example, kelp, kelp supplied, it has a salty taste. You can sprinkle on a lawyer. You can sprinkle on a salad. You can even sprinkle on a steak. You can put it on anything.
Kevin: This algae through just to …
David: Yeah, kelp is a seaweed and algae is probably the most important for us today with all the chemicals and toxins in our environment because it helps protect our immune system. In fact, in 1930 it was found that iodine, which is important in kelp, was the most powerful mineral for your immune system and wow, what an incredibly powerful piece of information . It also helps the thyroid and helps to speed metabolism. Thus, it helps us lose weight quickly.
Another thing that is really powerful is the coconut and coconut. Thus, any kind of coconut products generally helps to speed metabolism, gives us the right kinds of fats and oils and especially if these foods are raw. If the coconut is raw we get the kind of fat. Saturated fat is an essential part of being healthy. Although we have heard so much propaganda to the contrary, most saturated fat, we have heard has come about, such as animal products, or something that is a steak or something that has unsaturated fat that has been cooked. Now, once saturated fat has been cooked, then becomes problematic, but in its natural state first, that the Polynesians discovered over thousands of years, there was no link between heart disease and coconut, for saturated fat in coconut is almost always consumed in its raw natural state.
Kevin : Okay. So why have we heard that coconut oil is bad for you?
David: Well, it fits into the issues of our time in terms of food marketing. And there is a strong interest there. There is the interest of soybean. There is the interest of maize, which feed on the livestock industry, which feeds on the dairy industry. And the soy industry has a cheap material, it can create, which is hydrogenated oil. They can take a soybean oil that is rancid and gas bubble hydrogen through it and turn it into something that looks like coconut oil and is extremely difficult for the body to process. It is a trans fatty acid. It is a rancid fat. And they use propaganda against coconut oil and tropical to expel them from the U.S. market to be replaced by cheaper alternatives “soy products, products of hydrogenation of oil and products of hydrogenation corn oil. And it’s definitely something about the last ten years has finally reversed. People have finally realized oh, in fact, coconut is good for me and the Polynesians never had heart disease. In fact, the hydrogenated oil that has been most connected to the syndrome of all heart disease.
Kevin : Sure. And the speed of coconut oil metabolism?
David: Exactly. It is an incredible weight loss food. In general, whether we are able to eat on top of these two things, kelp and coconut oil, in general, so we are able to eat more vegetables than we’ll get more nutrition . We’re going to get fewer calories. We’ll get more fiber. We can snack on these things every day, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, things like that, right from our office or whatever we do and do not have to worry about gaining weight. In fact, we’ll probably lose weight if we snack all day because we keep our digestive system active. We increase our metabolism and we can make things happen more quickly because of all that fiber.
Kevin: What are some plans out there like the South Beach diet? Many people come to see me and they say, protein, protein, protein, protein. Tell me a little protein and what you have lived with it.
David: Well, the best sources of protein are plants because they are A.) The cleaner sources. One of the problems we have today is the feed industry can not be trusted. If we want to do a little research on what we can still return to Upton Sinclair’s incredible book written in 1930 about the meat industry in the 1930s, how toxic it was, all the way to John Robbins “Diet for a New America” and even the revelation that we find in “Fast Food Nation” and the most recent literature. What we are finding is that the industry is a fast-food industry. He lost love. He lost his compassion. He lost the attention to detail. These are things that I am intimately linked to when it comes to food because, you know, we are sensitive to subtle things in food. Everyone knows that home cooking tastes better mother. It’s just a fact. So if we have food that is treated with love, we know it tastes better. But if we the food is treated with unconsciousness, greed, the bottom line, then that food can be nutritious. I do not like the amount of protein it provides. Too much protein is a major toxic to kidney. It is very problematic for the heart and is generally slow time. We must be very careful that we get our protein from plant sources of protein so we get real. For example, hemp protein, is a complete protein. It contains sulfur (sulfur) bearing amino acids, which creates not only the muscles but the muscles flexible, which creates the neurotransmitters of the brain chemistry right. We can get our protein, for example, spirulina, which is a super food that was eaten, in say, Mexico for thousands of years and perhaps unknown to our listeners, but it is something we want to explore if we really want to get the right type of protein.
Kevin: Tell me more about Spirulina.
David: Spirulina is a microscopic algae that grew in the largest city in the world for thousands of years and even today is Mexico City. Now, how in the world did they feed all those people in Mexico City? I mean when Cortez arrived in 1520 in Mexico, he and his men could not believe what they saw. This was a city larger than any city in Europe. It was a city that feeds mainly on the source of proteins called PirulÃn, which is an alga. It is a spiral algae. They rose in the volcanic lakes and high altitude aircraft in the region of Mexico and they say that dry on the rocks and sell them on the market and it proved to be, when the analytical science of the West got a hold of it, the more protein content food in the world.
